NAN TIEN TEMPLE - AN ENLIGHTENING DAY TRIP FOR THE ARBOUR BERRY
Nan Tien is very different from your usual tourist attractions and a new and unique experience for twenty-five of our Arbour Residents. It offered culture, beautiful architecture, art, landscaped gardens and a chance to learn about Buddhist teachings.
The Buddhist temple complex located in Berkely, is one of the largest Buddhist temples in the southern hemisphere and run by charming nuns and everything is just perfectly maintained. The complex includes the Main Shrine within which are located monumental Buddha statues along with ten thousand smaller Buddhas. Our highly trained tour guide provided us with enlightening information and an insight into Chinese culture and the beliefs and practices of Humanistic Buddhism.
There were so many new and wonderful experiences. In addition to the tour, we engaged in various activities. On our arrival and in the temple courtyard, we silently performed slow smooth and continuous Tai Chi movements while our robed nun performed “Cloud hands in a Horse-riding Stance”, “Flying Dove Spreads Its Wings” and many other flowing motions of this ancient practice.
Residents participated in mindful calligraphy and were able to take home their masterpieces resulting from an hour of silent and mindful tracing of Chinese characters.
We enjoyed an authentic vegetarian lunch and shopping in the gift shops. Overall, an enriching experience we’ll remember.
